Science Research 1
In this course, students will explore and model the fundamental skills and procedures of scientific research. Mini-projects will guide the development of research processes and application of science content. Opportunities for collaboration with community partners, and between schools both on a local and global level drive real-life problem-solving and decision-making. Students will plan and carry out a main research project, collect and analyze data, and communicate their work through the development of a research paper and presentation.
Science Research acquaints students with the fundamental skills and procedures of individual research. Students will receive instruction in the use of library resources, computer online services (Internet), computer applications (databases, graphing, graphics, spreadsheets, and word processing), and statistical analysis. These processes will be integrated to a series of assigned laboratory activities representative of the different content areas. The use of electronic test equipment, as well as, computer interface probes are an integral part of data collection. There is a direct application of the science content to its appropriate technological applications. Students will be given extensive guidance in the preparation of a research paper to be prepared by the end of the course. An individual research project will also be developed during the course.

Biology. Advanced Topics in Chemistry is recommended prior to this course.

Honors Science Research 2-4
In this course, students will build upon the fundamental skills and procedures of scientific research acquired in Science Research I. Students will dive deeper into research processes and applications of science content by completing a new research project or proceeding with their project from Science Research I. They will use data analysis and experimental design to further develop critical thinking and communication skills. Collaboration with community partners, and between schools both on a local and global level will continue to drive real-life problem-solving and decision-making.
The student will develop a project and scientific paper suitable for presentation. The project may be a continuation from the previous year’s Science Research I class or a new project, though all projects will incorporate lab and computer skills learned in Science Research I. The projects may involve other schools, and students may work in cooperation with community and business leaders, as well as, local scientists and professionals. Students will develop advanced skills in authoring advanced multimedia presentations. The student will have the opportunity to develop the skills needed for more sophisticated laboratory work. Students must be responsible and disciplined as the class requires a large amount of independent work.
