Report Absence
Consistent Attendance is a Critical factor in Academic Success.
SCHS School Day is from 7:30 am – 2:20 pm
Report an Absence
SCH requires verification of every student absence and tardy. We will accept from the parent or legal guardian:
- A telephone call to 410-751-3575 before 9:00 a.m. on the day of absence
- An email to SCHAttendance@carrollk12.org
- A Fax to 410-751-3587
- A written note upon return to school.
Notes should include the student’s name, date of absence and reason for absence.
Students are not permitted to report their own absence.
We will attempt to contact parents via School Messenger the day of the absence. Parents are required to notify the school within five days of any absence. Otherwise, the absence will be coded as unlawful and unexcused.
(Please note the Athletic/Extracurricular activities policy for absences).
Tardy to School
Arriving after the 7:30 bell requires students to sign in at the office for a late pass. A note should accompany the student with a valid CCPS approved reason for the tardy. Students arriving without a note will be marked as unexcused. Two unexcused tardies is a verbal warning, a third unexcused tardy will result in lunch detention, a 4th unexcused tardy will result in after school detention. Notes to correct a student unexcused tardy must be received by the school within 2 school days. Notes received after two days may reverse unexcused attendance, however, may not reverse detention. (Please note the Athletic/Extracurricular activities policy for late arrivals).
Early Dismissal Procedure
Students who need to leave school before regular dismissal time (2:20) must bring in a note to school the day of the dismissal which includes the student’s name, date, dismissal time, reason for the dismissal, and a contact number of the parent/ guardian if verification is needed. Early dismissals should not be emailed to schattendance. Students must sign out in the main office before leaving and sign back in at the main office if they are returning after their appointment. If you have an emergency early dismissal, call the school. Students cannot write their own early dismissals notes.
(Please note the Athletic/Extracurricular activities policy for dismissals.)
Travel / Vacation
It is strongly recommended that parents plan travel or vacation for times when school is not in regular session. It is recognized, however, that occasionally students are absent for necessary or important family activities. When this occurs, prior written notification from a parent is to be approved by an administrator. The student takes a Travel Notification Form to each of their teachers to be signed and completed forms are returned to the Main Office prior to the vacation. Even though the absence may be excused, students are required to make up work missed during that time. Some schoolwork missed, such as class participation or laboratory experiments, does not lend itself to make up. Missing such assignments may also affect a student’s grades. All absences will apply to the school’s attendance policy and may result in the denial of course credit.
Student Travel / Vacation Approval Form
College Visits
Juniors and Seniors will be allowed three days per year for college visits with no absence charged, provided that written notification from a parent/guardian has been submitted for approval 2 days prior to the visit.
Learner’s Permit Attendance Form
As of October 1, 2007, the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) requires all applicants under the age of 16 to demonstrate an acceptable level of school attendance. Please refer to the MVA Website www.marylandmva.com or the Maryland State Department of Education’s Website at http://www.marylandpublicschools.org/msde for more information and to download the Maryland MVA Learner’s Permit School Attendance Certification form (DL-300). Students may also pick up a form from the main office. This change applies to all public, private, and homeschooled students.
Prior to obtaining a permit, the school must verify the student’s attendance. Please complete the form prior to submitting it to the school for verification. We ask parents to allow the school 24 hours to compile the attendance information and complete the form. We thank you in advance for your cooperation!
